Education and formation of girl children was the original ministry and medium chosen by our Founders as the first step in renewing and transforming the Society, as they believed that this would gradually prepare for the foundation of healthy Christian families and culture. Faithful to its original inspiration and Charism, the Congregation remained open to move on with the changing time and place and ventured into new ministries, answering to the needs as they presented themselves in various places and times. Today, spread out in four continents the members of the Congregation serve the needy in all possible walks of life.

Fr. Theodosius was carried by an incredible optimism, which was rooted in a boundless trust in God. His contemporaries both friends and foes considered him as one of the most outstanding “social reformer” who interpreted the traditional values of charity in a modern way. A man of action to the core, he planned his strategies and programmes according to the various needs. Thus in 1854, just after ten years of the first founding, he founded a sister Congregation, the Sisters of Mercy, today another International Congregation.

The spirit of our Congregation is the spirit of the Gospel, which animated St. Francis of Assisi that embraces the sufferings of humanity. The Congregation belongs to the religious family of Franciscan Order.

Holy Cross Sisters in India

Responding to a request made by a then regional king of south India, Kerala, to serve as medical personnel in the hospitals owned by him – a real need of that time – our pioneer sisters set their foot in India in the year 1906. Though humble the beginning of the Congregation in this ‘foreign land’, in God’s providential care, it was to grow slowly and steadily in the years to come and today we serve our needy fellow men and women in this vast sub-continent in three provinces – The south Indian Province, with its Provincial house at Kollam, the Central Indian Province with its Provincial house at Bangalore and the North Indian Province with its Provincial house at Lucknow.
